The second major differentiator between plastic and metal boxes as far as switches and Outlets are concerned is that plastic boxes have a 2 inch by 4 in footprint, which quite frankly is a little bit easier to work with for tucking the wires in whereas gangable metal wall case boxes are 2x3 footprint and you have to compensate with more depth to get the cubic inches.
Arlington F101 is the most tip common one I use that has that capability, Madison Electric which was acquired by Southwire has a similar product, and Carlon has recently come out with a competitive offering (but it requires snapping off a side bracket).

There is one specific subcategory of plastic boxes that do not have a metallic counterpart, which is the ones that have internal screws that enable you to mount the box in either a new work installation and be able to remove the box and reinstall it after the walls are closed or install the box as an old work installation and again be able to adjust the depth of the box if there is tile or other wall finishes applied over the substrate. Most of the better plastic boxes have built-in cable restraints however they vary quite a bit in terms of exactly how they work and many of them are a royal PITA to get the cable in, and once you get it in you can't really get it out without compromising the integrity of the restraint or ruining the insulation on the wires.īy comparison with metal boxes, they are comparatively friendly to removing the cables by simply loosening the screws on the clamps. My biggest issue with plastic boxes is that they are not all created equal, and have quite a bit of variance in quality, durability, ease of use both for installation and service work.
